Tasty Louisiana Green Velvet Okra Seeds (50 Seeds)
Category: air okra
The 1941 All-America Selections Winner, Louisiana Green Velvet Okra is a vibrant and productive variety. This okra seed produces beautiful leaves and bright yellow blooms. The plant is vigorous, yielding 5-8 slender, smooth pods. Harvest the pods promptly when they reach the appropriate size, as letting them grow larger will result in a tough texture. The pods retain their vivid color even when cooked.
Maturity is reached in 55-65 days, and the pods grow 6-7 inches long, round, slender, and smooth, with a noticeable amount of spines. The plants can reach a height of 7-8 feet.
This variety is particularly popular for canning, as it produces HUGE YIELDS that are SO...DELICIOUS. The okra is perfect for frying, gumbo, or simple boiling. Many people, including myself, love to make Pickled Okra, as it becomes wonderfully Crunchy and Tart, especially when combined with a few hot Peter Peppers. This dish always gets a second look due to the peppers, and my friends adore my pickled okra.
Okra is a warm-weather vegetable, and the seeds can be challenging to germinate. To speed up the process, soak the seeds in water overnight before planting. Space the seeds about 6 inches apart, around 1/2 inch deep in the row, and thin the seedlings to the recommended spacing. Alternatively, plant groups of two or three seeds at the final recommended spacing and then thin the groups to one plant.
Okra seedlings are sensitive to cool, wet soils and low air temperatures. Acidic soils can also result in poor pod development. To ensure a continuous supply of tender pods throughout late summer and fall, consider making a second planting of okra seeds about 6 weeks after the first.
To promote branching, make harvesting easier, and renew the plants, cut back tall okra plants to a height of 3 to 4 feet. At the same time, side dress the plants with a nitrogen fertilizer.
